Murals are found throughout downtown Minerva, both historic, like those on the side of the Minerva Historical Society, and pop-culture, like those found on a fence on Market and Line streets. Reconnect with Mother Nature as you fish on Leesville Lake, go boating on Atwood Lake, or go hiking on trails at Bluebird Farm Park and Atwood Lake Park. You will be able to enjoy Mother Nature firsthand, whether at a primitive tent campsite, RV park or cabin. The countryside is abundant with farms offering scenes rich with cattle, horses, alpacas and even buffalo. With no four-lane highways, the drive is part of the visitor experience. Carroll County’s beautiful countryside is a feast for the eyes, especially in the fall. For the past couple of years, the area has seen an influx of oil-and-gas industry as part of the Utica Shale play. Since the county has been the epicenter of the Utica Shale, visitors may occasionally see oil rigs on the horizon. The oil wells are not usually able to be seen from the roads and do not diminish the county’s beauty. The Seven Ranges Terminus, located west of Magnolia at the junction of Stark, Tuscarawas and Carroll Counties, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The stone surveying marker marked the completion of the first step in opening the lands northwest of the Ohio River for settlement. The county sits along one of the major overland routes from the east. The Great Trail, also known as the Tuscarawas Path, was used by Native Americans, European explorers, fur traders, missionaries, land agents and military expeditions. During the French-Indian War, Maj. Robert Rogers and 38 rangers passed through Carroll County en route to Fort Pitt after taking Fort Detroit from the French. The Continental Army under General Lachlan McIntosh camped along the route during the American Revolution. McCook, who along with his nine sons, two brothers and five nephews, would be known as the “Fighting McCooks” during the Civil War. The family home on the top of Public Square is now a museum focusing on the family’s bravery on the battlefield and features the Henry Rifle he used to protect the White House in the early days of the Civil War. McCook ironically died as Ohioans hunted the Confederate General John Hunt Morgan, who would ultimately be captured in Columbiana County after a skirmish with Union soldiers near Mechanicstown. This would be the northernmost battle in the Civil War. The McCook House, along with the Courthouse and the Van Horne Building, are on the National Register of Historic Places. Also on the registry are the John Herrington House and Herrington Bethel Church in Augusta Township, Patrick Hull House near Oneida, Kilgore Union Presbyterian Church in Kilgore, Petersburg Mill in Union Township, Henry and Mary Pottorf House and Farmstead in Augusta Township, St. Mary’s of Morges Catholic Church in Rose Township, and Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad Station in Minerva. AGRICULTURAL FUN Agriculture is important to Carroll County residents. Various types of farms dot the rolling hills and scenic vistas. The three alpaca farms welcome visitors to tour their shops and give people an opportunity to see the animals up close. Bison roam another farm, which is the site of the Great Trail Festival. Sink your teeth into an apple grown at Manfull Orchards, a seven- generation orchard, and peruse the family’s farmers market. There are several farm markets located on the farms throughout the county that you can get plants in the spring as well as produce throughout the growing season. During the summer and fall, two community farmers markets feature plants, fruits, bake goods and craft items. Animals highlight Carroll County’s fair as area teens showcase their cows, horses, goats, lambs, rabbits and poultry. For those who enjoy the machinery side of agriculture, the fair also features a combine demolition derby and tractor pulls. Another highlight is a three-day tractor show in October.8 39 39 39 9 9 9 43 171 183 524 542 542 164 164 332 164 212 332 43 39 9 43 43 183 EAST AUGUSTA BROWN ROSE HARRISON UNION MONROE ORANGE PERRY LOUDON LEE CENTER WASHINGTON FOX Minerva Augusta Malvern Magnolia New Harrisburg Mechanicstown Harlem Springs Petersburg Algonquin Mill Perrysville Kilgore Dellroy Sherrodsville Leesville Carrollton Lake Mohawk Atwood Lake Leesville Lake STARK COUNTY HARRISON COUNTY TUSCAR AW AS C OUNT Y JEFFERSON CO UN TY CO L UMBIANA C OUNT Y Carroll County is just a short drive from Akron, Canton, Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh and Wheeling.
