However, when the phrase “…but master of none” is added, this hints at an insult — inferring that a person knows how to do a lot of things, but doesn’t necessarily excel at any of them. And “Jack” was a very common name in history. What’s in a Name? Chatty Cathy: A person who loves to make conversation, sometimes to the point of being annoying. The “Cathy” was chosen not only for alliteration, but because the two words rhyme somewhat. In the 1960s, there was a popular doll named Chatty Cathy, and another named Talky Tina. One of those dolls was a main character in a rather terrifying Twilight Zoneepisode. Average Joe: A description of a man who is neither poor nor rich, just a middle-class guy who doesn’t really stand out in a crowd. And even though this phrase isn’t alliterative, the name “Joe” at the time the phrase was coined was one of the most common names for men. Debbie Downer: Another great alliteration, “Debbie Downer” was made popular by a character portrayed in Saturday Night Live skits. “Debbie Downer” first appeared on the show in May of 2004. She has an awful knack for inserting really depressing and negative comments into any and every conversation, and ruining everyone’s good time. In spite of her name, Ms. Downer has brought a whole lot of laughter with her lame comments. Joe Cool: Snoopy, Charlie Brown’s dog in the Peanuts comic strip, dons a pair of sunglasses and transforms into an alter ego of “Joe Cool.” A “Joe Cool” thinks he is popular with everyone, and idolizes Fonzie from Happy Days . Smart Alec: This is a person with a sarcastic, disrespectful or sneaky attitude. This one originated from a thief and con artist named Alec Hoag, who lived in New York City in the 1840s. Mr. Hoag apparently bribed and then cheated people quite often, among other dastardly deeds. Nervous Nellie: “Old Nell” at one time was a nickname for an aging horse. A high-strung horse, such as a racehorse, was called a “Nervous Nellie.” The name gradually began being applied to describe an uptight, fearful or nervous person. Gloomy Gus: A nickname attached to any consistently miserable or sad person, “Gloomy Gus” first appeared in the Happy Hooligan comic strip and animated silent cartoons. He wore a threadbare suit with patches, and looked the part. What’s in a Name? A guy was playing a big bass drum. Proud he did feel With his head high in the air He stepped on a banana peel. His feet went up where his head had been, His drum went on the ground, And his seat went thru the drum head With a horrible sickening sound. And now when the band goes down the street I always hear him say, “Yes, we have no bananas We have no bananas today.” – by Linus J. It’s easy to make, economical, and can be prepared so many ways. It’s dinner at our house almost every week, either topped with marinara, a creamy white sauce, or tossed with olive oil and fresh herbs. Lately I’ve added pasta with vodka sauce to the rotation. While it’s traditionally prepared with penne pasta, feel free to use any kind of pasta you have on hand. If desired, you can also add meatballs or pieces of grilled chicken or shrimp. 16 oz Penne Pasta 4 Cloves Chopped Garlic 1 Small Chopped Onion 4 T Butter, Divided 2 T Olive Oil 1 C Vodka 14 Oz Tomato Sauce 1 C Heavy Cream Pinch Red Pepper Flakes Salt & Pepper To Taste Fresh Basil Parmesan Cheese 1 Heat a large saucepan over medium heat. Add olive oil and 2 tablespoons of butter. Add chopped onion and sauté until soft, about 3 minutes. 2 Add chopped garlic and stir for 30 seconds until fragrant. 3 Carefully pour in the vodka. (If using gas stove, temporarily remove from burner.) Simmer for 2-3 minutes, cooking off the alcohol until liquid is slightly reduced. 4 Add tomato sauce and stir until well incorporated. 5 Reduce heat to medium low and mix in heavy cream. Sprinkle in red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper to taste. Add 2 tablespoons of butter and allow sauce to simmer on low. 6 Prepare penne pasta as instructed to al dente. 7 Drain and stir into the sauce, along with 2 tablespoons of reserved pasta water. 8 Continue to simmer an additional 3-4 minutes until slightly thickened. 9 Spoon into serving bowls and top with fresh basil leaves and freshly grated parmesan cheese. Ingredients Steps QUICK TIP How to keep your Basil plant happy while indoors Provide at least 6 hours of sunlight a day (your kitchen window is often the best place). Water deeply at least once a week. (approx. 1 inch of water every week.) Remove no more than a third of the plant’s total height at a time.CommunityCouponMagazine.com • Spring 2024 • In homes February 26 - May 19, 2024 9 YOUR SUCCESS STARTS HERE.
