They use the wind to “steer” the balloon by finding wind currents at different altitudes that are moving in slightly different directions. This means that you will never see them turn back around and land where they took off from. Pilots are trained in checking weather and wind directions and know the general direction they will fly. Balloons don’t have to land at airports. So where do they land? Ideal landing spots include empty parking lots, golf courses and open fields that are free from power lines, trees and other obstacles. While this may seem unusual, it is actually quite normal and expected in a balloon. So when you do see a balloon drop down in your neighborhood, please know that they are okay. Chances are it was a completely planned and executed safe landing so there is no need to dial 911. On the off chance that something did go unplanned and emergency services are needed, they have a crew of highly trained professionals on the ground that will make that assessment and make phone calls as needed. This prevents emergency call centers from being bombarded with mixed or inaccurate information. Pilots always try to get permission before landing on private property. They will have a crew member check with the home owner to be sure it is okay to land. Want a hot air balloon to land in your yard? All you need to do is lay out a big white bed sheet in an open area on your property, so the pilot can see it from the sky. This is especially helpful if you’re not going to be home. Balloon pilots do their best to be respectful of landowners by avoiding fields planted with crops or pastures with animals. If you see a balloon land, please be respectful and ask permission before approaching the balloon. Keep Your Eyes Open For the Balloons! 9Next >
